Bulls for Sale
We are mainly a private treaty operation. At this point we do not have the numbers to host our own production sale. We sometimes market bulls through consignment sales across the region, but most bulls are purchased off the farm. Each year we will have Angus and Hereford yearling bulls. Most are chosen before a year of age and then picked up when they reach the age of a breeding soundness exam.
One reason that most of our customers come to us is we take pride in making sure our bulls are docile and easy to work with.
A lot of our customers have children, and we can't take the risk of selling someone a bull that can be dangerous.
Another reason for most of our customers is cost share eligible bulls to use on heifers.
In our region of Kentucky, most cow-calf farms are less that 20 cows. This means that almost every customer will have to use the herd bull on mature cows and heifers.
We do attempt to make sure the majority of our bulls will meet that criterion while trying not to lose performance in weaning weight.
We also attempt to make sure all of our bulls will meet at least one of the categories to be cost-share eligible.
We guarantee at least one breeding season for every bull sold. We understand things happen in this business.
No bulls will leave Sturgeon Creek without passing a BSE test.
At the end of the day, we know no bull or cow is perfect. All of them have flaws and traits that need improvement. What we do believe in is the power of the cow. We have made great efforts to invest in some of the strongest cow families in the entire breed of Angus. Some of these famous cow lines have proven to be prepotent transmitters of traits that make the cow special.
We know at the end of the day; we all need cows that aren't going to cause the farmer problems. She needs to be easy fleshing, good footed, fertile, and raise a quality calf each year. While at the same time, still be competitive in carcass traits.
Embryo Transfer and Artificial Insemination are staples of our program. We try to get as many of our cows bred by these two practices as possible for genetic diversity. However, we are very strategic with each mating, and we are meticulous with our bull choices. After two cycles in breeding season, we then use a bull from in the herd to clean up. One last difference with us and most seed stock producers is creep feeding.
Sturgeon Creek understands most of our customers do not creep feed, and we try to mirror our customers. At 205 days, our calves are weaned in a concrete floored barn and at that point they move from only grass to grain/hay.
With that being said, our yearlings will not be fat. Our hope is to develop slowly to be ready on their feet and legs for the steep terrain of Southeastern Kentucky. The good part of not helping the pre-weaned calves, you can easily identity what mothers in the herd are the most productive. This is not to be critical of any other operations, but for our farm and our customers, this works best for us.
We welcome all visitors anytime of the year. We do encourage you before looking at one of our bulls, come visit and view the cow herd.
